About 500km south of Santiago, Chile, lies a hidden gem for whitewater kayakers and adventure seekers. Cutting its path along the Patagonia border, the Futaleufu Valley plunges through the breathtaking Andes Mountains from bordering Argentina across to the Pacific Ocean. The gravel road accessing the valley was built 15 years ago and electricity just recently became widely available, so it remains a pristine and very rural atmosphere. The valley floor consists of beautiful rolling hills and lush pastures where sheep and cattle graze, while the forests that line the mountainsides come alive with the colors and music of tropical bird life. The people of this region are healthy and proud of their land. They welcome visitors with open arms, genuine exuberance and a round of hot Matte (a traditional Chilean swill).
